Task:What are the definitions of happiness? What is the factors in
achieving happiness. Give some examples and relavant evidence.
Nowadays, under a fast-paced society filled with fierce job competition and
stress, people are more willing to figure out the root of happiness. In my
views, the standards of deciding whether a person is happy or not are
multi-dimensional, and my recognition about happiness will be presented as
below.
A variety of psychological, religious and philosophical approaches have
strained to define happiness and its sources because of the diversity of this
feeling in different people. Happiness actually is a mental or spiritual
feeling. The mentality of human is very complex because it varies from person to
person. For example, some people are happy if they top the exams, or some may be
happy to just pass them. Similarly, some people derive a sense of satisfaction
from earning money or achieving success, whereas for others, health and family
are much more important. Moreover, something or a course of action can be a
cause of happiness for one person but this may bring sorrows for other person.
For instance, teenagers can be exhilarated by receiving emotional excitement. In
eyes of old generations, however, such happiness might turn into the
painfulness, because what can please them is the feelings of peacefulness and
quietness.
There are many factors that contribute to happiness. Firstly, the material
security, or basic survival needs including job, food, housing and health care,
is the precondition to achieve it. Obviously, it is hard for a person to be
happy if he or she is homeless, jobless hungry or ill. Secondly, the greatest
joy in life is usually found in shared experiences with family and friends, and
it is rare to find a person who is content to live in complete isolation. Last
but not the least, person should be cheerful and optimistic. Generally speaking,
ups and downs, difficulties and challenges in life are inevitable for any
individual, no matter how smart or wealthy he or she is. That is to say, in
order to pursue the true happiness, people should hold self-confidence and
active attitudes towards those troubles and worries, by which people can be less
vulnerable to depression, anxiety and frustration.
In conclusion, happiness is difficult to define because it is particular to
each individual, but I believe that our basic needs for shelter, food, company
and positive mind need to be fulfilled before we can experience it.
