“bear”在GRE中竟然考过这么多种意思？！

大家比较熟悉的日常中容易使用到的bear有两个含义：

1. [noun] 一种动物…熊…

2. [verb] 容忍（=endure）

I can't bear seeing you cry.

除了这两个大部分同学都比较熟悉的意思之外，bear在英文中是一个使用场景很多、含义很多的词。先上张韦氏辞典的截图感受一下：

原谅我屏幕太小还不会滚动截图只能截到这里了…是不是看的眼花缭乱…（你再也不是我认识的那个“熊”了！）

接下来就来盘点一下GRE中出现过的“bear”！

1. 有…（某种特征）

：to have as a feature or characteristic

A hoard of coins recently unearthed at an ancient Carthagian site bear an image of a face in profile with what appears to be a large mole on the cheek.

这句话来自于一道逻辑单题，这里的bear直接理解成“有”就可以了~这也是bear在GRE中出现频次很高的一种用法。

该句的整体理解是：最近发现的硬币上有一张脸的图像，脸颊上有一颗痣。
2.对…负责；承担责任：to be accountable for; assume:

This evidence does not refute the contention that editors should bear some of the blame for the reductions.

 这句话也来自于一道逻辑单题，这里的bear就是“承担”~
该句的整体理解是：这个证据不能否认编辑应该承担一些责备。
3. 行为/举止：conduct

Though Edmund certainly had a dignified bearing and made a great first impression, those who became acquainted with him soon realized he had an essentially pugnacious nature.

这句话来自一道填空题（下划线处是空格），这里是bear的名词bearing，在这个语境下应该理解成行为/举止。

该句的整体理解是：尽管Edmund举止端庄，但是熟悉他后很快会发现他内心很暴躁…
GRE中还出现过和bear相关的一些短语
1. bear out = confirm 证实
据不完全统计，不知道bear out是证实的同学大概有80%以上的比例…
曾经有道阅读题的正确选项就出现了这个表达，很多同学都跪在了不认识“bear out”上：

The apparent degree of relatedness of some species, as determined by anatomical criteria, is not borne out by their degree of genetic.

这里的borne是bear的过去分词，bear out是“证实”~
对这个句子的整体理解是：
通过解刨方法得到的物种之间的相关性没有被基因方法所证实。
2. no bearing on  与… 无关

His political view, harking back to the turmoil in the 1934, is a  relic with no bearing on the present.

这句话是一道填空题（下划线处是空格）:他的观点可以回溯到1934年的动乱，跟现在没什么关系。
bear虽然词典上的释义百花齐放，但是只要掌握的上述几种，之后碰到后再结合具体语境就都能理解的八九不离十啦！
